Can we just stop and appreciate Nicki Minaj’s face for a moment. She looks genuinely very concerned for Josh here, like she thinks he was actually in an arena full of kids trying to kill him, and is confused as to why no one else finds this as shocking as she does.

Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob review

No one could accuse indie-rock duo, Tegan and Sara, of not striving for the highest of heights. After 15 years recording together the Canadian Quin twins have released Heartthrob, their seventh studio album, which careens away from acoustic roots and into the vein of synthpop.

Whilst it’s true that the vast majority of Tegan and Sara’s back catalogue could be classified as indie-rock, make no mistake, Heartthrob is first and foremost a pop record.

Following on from 2009’s Sainthood, Heartthrob has the distinct feel that the sisters have embraced their own maturity, something which is noticeably reflected throughout the album. For one thing it’s certainly more sexually-charged than all of its predecessors. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that Heartthrob’ssubject matter includes forays into love – successful or not.

Leading track, “Closer”, whilst not the twin’s usual forte is incredibly addictive and one of the highlights of the album. A three minute anecdote of impulsive lust, stolen touches and instant gratification; it’s honest, fast-paced and perhaps a little brash but my God, is it fantastic. “All you think of lately is getting underneath me. All I dream of lately is how to get you underneath me,” Tegan reveals. Quite.

“Drove Me Wild” and “I Couldn’t Be Your Friend” take the rapid pace down a notch and provide further insight into the passions and pains of love, sitting contently atop a base of synthesisers. Both could easily be contenders for the Quin’s second single off the album.

Traditionally Tegan and Sara have combined their vocals, alto voices melding together in perfectly seamless tandem. Of course there are some spectacular harmonies scattered throughout Heartthrob but we also hear more from the sisters individually which makes for a pleasantly welcome shift. Instead of the sometimes frantic, punchy vocals, present on earlier works everything feels altogether more relaxed and natural.

For those age-old fans who are worried the duo they know and love is gone, fear not. “Now I’m All Messed Up” is a throwback to the twin’s earlier days, showcasing the bittersweet sentiment which first earned them a place in the hearts of the perpetually unlucky-in-love. A gentle ode to a failed relationship with an infectious hook, it’s the perfect recipe for a broken heart and could well be the best track on the album. “Now I’m all messed up, sick inside wondering who, whose life you’re making worthwhile.”

“How Come You Don’t Want Me” and “I Was a Fool” are also beautifully despondent tracks reminiscent of the So Jealous era. “Goodbye Goodbye” is also worth mentioning as a jaunty lament for a past relationship.

Heartthrob may be a step in a new direction for Tegan and Sara but that’s not to say any of their peculiarity or unique charm has been lost in transition. Essentially, it all comes down to love; whether it’s fleeting lust, long-standing adoration or something altogether unrequited. Tegan and Sara cover it all with unashamed emotional depth and the unrivalled ability to relate to their audience, just as they always have.
